Mental Health and Wellbeing

Wellbeing - a holistic developmental approach, inclusive of mental health,
is necessary for all members of the community

The pandemic of COVID-19 assault has opened up our minds to the rising critical global need for mental wellbeing among individuals, family, and community. Mental health complements a healthy body to foster resilience within the self that equips us to pull through life’s failures, accidents, losses and trauma in the continuum of life.

In the Indian context, building community awareness and support is essential in order to enhance mental health among common people. By reflecting on child rearing ways, along with building consciousness for family, friends and workplace, we can bring about significant progressive transformation in the quality of mental health care in India.

Beyond Pathology:

The need for mental health crosses all boundaries of class & gender in society. In today’s time it is a socio-cultural necessity for psychological wellbeing of every member in society. For a country like India, with its existing layers of caste, class and gender discrimination, it is very important to seek a ‘holding climate’ for both within the self and in external reality.

Patriarchy & Gender Sexuality:

As times change in parenting practices go through repeated redefinition, and so does one’s identity and sexuality. Patriarchy as a structure promotes a toxic sense of power and authoritarianism as the locus of the social system – in present times, it is necessary to free oneself from such oppression and find one’s own identity and gender orientation.

Psychoanalysis & Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy:

According to the psychoanalytic principle, human behaviour results from continuous interactions between the three forces – id, ego and superego. The unconscious conflicts form the root cause of psychological symptoms which through psychoanalytic intervention can be managed to resolve the pain. Free association, dream analysis, internal resistances, fantasies, are various ways to approach and take care of our inner conflicts.
