Jhuma Basak, a psychoanalyst and an artist who started her career as a dancer-artist and then later moved into psychoanalysis. Her mother, Mira Brahmachari, a dancer-artist herself, was Jhuma’s inspiration in the persuasion of her creative quest. Jhuma has been trained in classical dance forms like Odissi, Bharatnatyam, Kathakali. Jhuma was a founding member of Dancers’ Guild, Calcutta, and was one of the lead performers
of the company from 1982 till 1994. She travelled across the world (South America, USA, England, Scotland, China, Philippines) performing along with Guild productions supported by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations. That rich global creative experience acted as her foundation to the development of her cultural and artistic eye. Much later, in the late 90s and early 2000, she embarked upon a completely new concept and a new form of dance-theatre productions, called Versedance – a non- linear
performing text based on a poetic text, using dance, movement, theatre, and music to create an innovative dramatic performing narrative. Her creative productions found the support of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, and the India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore, to stage performances based on the poetic works of Shakespeare, Tagore,
Rilke, Neruda, Jibananda Das, Mina Kumari, Amrita Pritam, along with her dance-theatre production of Euripides’ Medea.

Having completed her graduation and post-graduation in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, Jhuma later moved into psychoanalysis to attain her PhD in Psychology from the Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan. She is presently a Training & Supervising Psychoanalyst of the Indian Psychoanalytical Society, and member of the
International Psychoanalytical Association, London (IPA). Her interest in psychoanalysis lies in culture & gender. Her psychoanalytic approach is based on a psycho-sociocultural framework. She has publications in different languages like Japanese, Italian, French, Spanish. And over the past 20 years, she has presented at various IPA Congresses along with the Keynote for the 53rd IPA Congress in Cartagena in 2023. Other academic institutional presentations comprise the Washington Baltimore Centre for Psychoanalysis, Hakuoh University, Kyushu University and so on. She is the co-editor of the book, Psychoanalytic & Socio-Cultural Perspectives on Women in India, and editor of the book, Sculpting Psychoanalysis in India – Sudhir Kakar. Presently she is working
on her book on primal relationship in Japan & India from Routledge.

Basak has been the past Co-Chair of the Asia Committee on Women & Psychoanalysis (COWAP), and continues to be its consultant. She organized the 1st and the 2nd COWAP international conferences in Calcutta in 2018 & 2019. Presently she is the Co-Chair of Allied Centres of the ING-IPA. She has been a mentor for the Psychoanalytic Study Group in the Dept of Psychology at the Christ University, Bangalore, and a visiting professor at the Ambedkar University. Her academic associations comprises NSHM Knowledge Campus, Calcutta, and the Karnavati University, Ahmedabad West Bengal State University, St. Xaviers University, Asutosh College and so on. She continues to offer lectures on psychoanalysis in different universities, NGOs, & other social platforms.

Basak’s clinical experience includes working with hospitals like the Max Hospital in Gurgaon, Woodlands & Medica hospitals in Kolkata, and the Crystal Minds in Kolkata..
